Designed with the girl of African descent in mind, this action packed, invigorating week introduces the concept of the Butterfly as a symbol for transformation and emphasizes self-awareness, self-acceptance, and responsibility as tools for change.

Camp Butterfly holds its primary camping sessions during the summer months. During our summer sessions, we welcome teenaged girls ages 11-17, from across the country to one-week sessions held at our camp sites in rural Michigan and Illinois . The camp program combines the carefree adventures of typical “sleep-away” camps in a compassionate and culturally rich atmosphere. The camp schedule features days packed with fun and exciting programming.

Activities offered include:

  • Creative Visualization/Guided Imagery
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Self-Esteem and Team Building Games
  • Nature Walks
  • Special Performances/Workshops by Guest Artists
  • African Dance and morning Yoga
  • Indoor and Outdoor Activities
  • Body Imaging and more...

Camp days end with exciting all-camp activities such as campfires, “Old school/New school” dance parties, late night “flashlight tag”, and scavenger hunts. Nights in the cabins are often filled with voices and laughter, discussing topics ranging from their funniest memories of the day to their personal hopes and fears. We provide a safe environment where girls are encouraged to fully engage their “highest” self, along with embracing, nurturing and celebrating their “inner child”.

“Connecting the branches to the roots of the tree.”

As women of African descent, our history is our driving force. We hope that sharing the lessons learned will help develop character in our young women. We believe that it is through the process of women reaching back, that young women will be able to move forward.

After the girls have completed the “sleep-away” portion of Camp Butterfly, they are ready to continue their transformation through our Fall Program. (In some cases, girls begin the Program in the Fall, and attend camp afterwards. Both ways yield transformation in the participants.) The program utilizes the culturally sensitive Risk-Reduction Education curriculum, “ If the Caterpillar Only Knew...” (created by the organization, Project Butterfly.)

Our In-School and After-School programs take a psycho-cultural approach towards self-development.

The program is divided into 4 phases that embody and correspond to the 4 stages of the complex life cycle of the butterfly, thus completing the Metamorphosis.

During the entire program, girls are given plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience, positive reinforcement as well as constructive feedback.

Visit www.ProjectButterfly.com for more information about Project Butterfly's curriculums.

We also continue to positively impact our alumni through quarterly reunions, internet communication and other activities.
