Camp Butterfly’s Girls Gone Green Presents…
What does it mean to be Green?
There has been a global push in recent years to “Go Green” and “Save the Earth.” New technologies, initiatives and programs are proposed and implemented everyday with the sole purpose of creating more environmentally conscious citizens. But what does going green really mean, especially when viewed from the perspective of inner city youth, in particular females? Why is going green so important? How can “going green” become more of a tangible reality for inner-city youth instead of a distant ideal seemingly reserved for the wealthy, rich and famous? How can we make the connection between taking care of and respecting Earth and taking care of and respecting our temples, our bodies, our own personal Earths? What is the correlation between our spiritual, physical, mental, economic and emotional wellbeing to the wellbeing of our environment?
This six-month pilot program aims to answer these questions and will in the process:
- Teach girls environmental literacy
- Reconnect participants to their natural surroundings
- Weave the connection between the environment and the participant (i.e. our history and who we are today)
- Encourage participants to look at their community, city and the world through an engendered environmental lens of awareness, advocacy and action
The Camp Butterfly Girls Gone Green program will implement several methodologies all aimed at fostering a holistic approach and perspective of self and the environment. Through fieldtrips, green arts projects, natural self-care and community service projects, Camp Butterfly aims to encourage and nurture participants’ awareness of the environment and environmental issues while preparing these young women to be ambassadors of environmental justice and advocacy for future generations.
The Inaugural Program session starts Saturday, March 20 and meets every third Saturday of the month until Saturday, August 21.
The cost of program is $45.
